Protect Your Culture. Say “No” to HB7033 and HB1221.
Dear Friends,
We hope this message finds you well. I want to bring to your attention two pieces of legislation currently under consideration in the Florida Legislature that could significantly impact arts and cultural institutions across our state, including our beloved Lake Wales History Museum.
House Bill 7033 proposes substantial changes to the allocation of Tourist Development Tax (TDT) revenues. If enacted, this bill would:
Eliminate the requirement that at least 40% of TDT funds be used for tourism promotion and advertising.
Allow TDT revenues to be redirected toward general government expenses, rather than being invested in tourism, arts, and cultural sectors.
Dissolve existing Tourist Development Councils by the end of 2025, removing local oversight of these funds.
House Bill 1221 complements HB 7033 by further altering the use of local option taxes, including the TDT. This bill would:
Require periodic reauthorization of local discretionary sales taxes, potentially disrupting long-term planning for cultural institutions.
Allow counties to use TDT revenues for property tax relief, diverting funds away from tourism and cultural initiatives.
At the Lake Wales History Museum, TDT funds are annually instrumental in supporting programs like Pioneer Days, Beers with Pioneers, and our upcoming 50th-anniversary celebration. These initiatives provide accessible cultural experiences to students, families, seniors, and visitors from across the region.
The potential reallocation of TDT funds threatens not only our museum but also countless galleries, theaters, and cultural centers throughout Florida that rely on this funding to serve their communities.
How You Can Help:
Contact Your State Legislators: Urge them to oppose HB 7033 and HB 1221. Emphasize the importance of preserving TDT funds for tourism, arts, and cultural programs.
Support Local Institutions: Consider donating, becoming a member, or volunteering with local cultural organizations.
Spread the Word: Share this message with friends and family. Attend local events and encourage others to get involved.
Tourism and culture are not luxuries—they are vital components of our community's identity and economy. Let's work together to ensure that these institutions continue to thrive for generations to come.
Thank you for your support and dedication to preserving Florida's rich cultural heritage.
